Me
and the Bear |
|
I don’t have a fixed approach to writing; it’s
constantly evolving. I am always trying to push myself
to the edges of my thinking. I need to take risks, move
beyond what I feel comfortable with, and realise that
I don’t always know where my writing is going
to take me or what it’s going to turn into.
But there’s also a more structured, directed
part to my thinking, and this comes through in the extensive
research I do for my writing. I studied history and
literature before embarking on a freelance writing career.
I wrote a doctoral thesis at Oxford University on the
cult American author Djuna
Barnes, whose 1936 novel Nightwood is a
peculiar modern masterpiece.
For me, writing is about striking a balance
between instinct and intellect. It’s about being,
somehow, an animal with the capacity for language.
